In 1893 Mr. Thomson was Acting Registrar General, and rather inconsiderately, in my opinion, reduced the staff of the office by two Chinese writers, as a result there are now only two writers who devote their time to verifying the correctness of the householders' registers of Victoria, and they have to be in the office half their time. There is therefore practically only one man to verify the correct registration of over 7000 houses, and this causes the supervision exercised to be ineffective.
8. The pay of the new Clerk ought to be $15.00 a month, as he must know enough English to fill in licences correctly. I may add that, even working the long hours that he does, the shroff's assistant could not get through the work if he did not receive a great deal of help from the office boys.
